After studying the different landforms (mountains, plains, oceans, islands and hills), students used white modeling clay to show the different landforms found in the United States. When the clay dried, students made a map legend, decided what colors to represent each land form, and used watercolor to paint their model accordingly.

Using 12 same-sized Chinese New Year red envelopes, students folded and created Chinese New Year lanterns. Yellow yarn was used to create the hanging tassels.

Students folded colored paper squares to create symmetrical 3D pop-up art.
Chinese Culture Appreciation- Chinese Paper Cutting

A traditional Chinese art form, students were able to use scissors to cut out the white areas on a photocopy of a panda. The cut-out panda was then backed on red paper to offer contrast.

An easy beginning of the year art project: have students cover their names with mosaic squares. This could be done with their first names in English or with their surname in Chinese. This makes for an easy year-round display as students learn each others names and get acquainted.
